Short Profile of the Person:

Dr. Dieter R. Fuchs, President of WAITRO, German nationality, has 30 years of experience in applied sciences and research management. With mineralogy as his academic background, he worked as a researcher and manager in geosciences, analytical chemistry, environmental technology, materials research and cultural heritage conservation.

After university he immediately oriented his career internationally, during the late seventies in southern Europe and Iran. In the early eighties he was Project Manager for the National Analytical Lab at Yemen Oil & Mineral Resources Corp. in Sanaa, Yemen.

In 1986 he returned to Germany and joined Fraunhofer, a leading applied research organization with over 12.000 experts and an annual research turnover of 1.3 billion EURO. He there, besides other tasks, for 10 years was holding Director positions at the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research and at the Fraunhofer Branch Institute for Glass Research. During these creative years as a researcher, Dieter Fuchs published more than 50 scientific papers, was lecturer and invited speaker worldwide. He was awarded several research prizes like the Fraunhofer Research Award (1992) and the Otto Schott Research Award (1993). Some of his inventions were standardized as VDI and DIN Guidelines, internationally patented and applied in industrial practice with great success.

In 1996 he moved to Fraunhofer Headquarters and built up and since then headed the Strategy Department for International Business Development. Within this period the international revenues of Fraunhofer grew from 30 million EURO (1996) to 120 million EURO (2006). He established and supervised the Representative Offices of Fraunhofer abroad and managed various interdisciplinary strategic projects of internationalisation. He was member of the Coordination Council for International Cooperation of the German Research & Funding Organisations and member in German working groups for international strategies on State and federal level. He worked also as consultant and advisor for authorities in Asia and Africa and as Rapporteur for the European Commission in Latin America. He delivered more than 500 lectures and key note addresses on international science management issues.

In March 2007 he permanently moved to Dubai and now is in charge of Fraunhofer´s regional MENA business as General Manager Middle East.

Dieter Fuchs is committed to create partnerships of mutual benefit between science and industry, and to foster the exchange of experiences between scientists and technology experts from industrialised and developing countries. He appreciates any opportunity to support capacity building by fair international cooperation.

His personal interests include classical literature and poems, active sports (marathon) as well as studying and collecting special Chinese and Japanese miniature arts (toggles and netsuke).
