1. Hamburg
High quality medicine made in Germany
The history of medicine is as old as humanity but modern medicine of the highest level has also enjoyed a long tradition in Northern Germany. Doctors and scientists from Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Niedersachsen and Mecklenburg-West Pomerania are at the forefront of global treatment and research. A number of them have received Nobel Prizes for medicine. German researchers have made discoveries representing major contributions to many fields of medicine including cardiac catheter research, diphtheria inoculation and the treatment of tuberculosis.
A wide spectrum of outstanding institutions.
The German healthcare system is one of the most efficient in the world. More than 260 billion euros annually are dedicated to health care and infrastructure in Germany, benefiting patients on the receiving end of the chain.
This in turn results in a wide spectrum of highly efficient health care institutions, which not only serve to provide ideal coverage of local health needs but are also much sought after by numerous patients from abroad. As has always been the case, university clinics play a major part in the health care system. A characteristic feature of such clinics is the way in which they utilize the methodological breadth of a large hospital, while simultaneously combining resources and providing an efficient therapeutic program based on special areas of emphasis.
In addition to the university clinics there are many other specialist institutions in North Germany offering services at the very highest level. The Damp Group’s Hamburg ENDO Clinic is regarded as a world leader in hip replacement. One of the top national hospitals for trauma surgery; treatment of severe hand injuries; severe burns injuries and spinal cord injuries is located in the region: the Hospital of the Workman’s Compensation Insurers, known locally as BG Trauma Hospital. The hospital has received many awards, including a number from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The cardiological department of the St. George Asclepios Hospital and the Albertinen Hospital, both in Hamburg, enjoy an international reputation. Over and above this the University of Hanover has pioneered a new operating method based on implants and practically unique worldwide for treating congenitally deaf babies. The revolutionary procedure makes it possible fo r the children to regain completely their ability to hear. The Lubinus Clinicum in Kiel specializes in orthopedic surgery, concentrating on the fields of endoprosthetics; foot and hand surgery and microsurgery.
Medical technology and its application to patients' special needs
North Germany can be considered the ideal location for medical technology, thanks in particular to the size of the corporate groups located in this area and the dominant market positions that they hold. There are few other regions with such a pronounced economic structure in the field of medical technology research and development. This strength is not ephemeral but rather based on a solid foundation. The region is home to many large companies with long traditions, and in many fields of medical technology North Germany holds the lead with innovative products and praxis-related research.
Hamburg is also famous for its life sciences industry. This sector has experienced rapid development in recent years. There is extensive cooperation between the industry and researchers. A multifaceted network of both traditional and high-tech companies, renowned research institutes and universitites have evolved, with the common goal of turning innovative ideas into markable products.
A region with tradition
The Northern German healthcare and life sciences industry is one of the leading industries in Hamburg. There are some 500 life science and healthcare companies with approx. 270,000 employees in Northern Germany. This strength is not surprising. Already back in 1896, Carl Heinrich Florenz Müller produced the first x-ray tubes in Hamburg and thus made the city a hub of innovative imaging technology. Carrying on this tradition, Philips Medical Systems develops and produces highly innovative imaging technologies in Hamburg today. Further distinguished companies based in the region include the Olympus Optical Europe GmbH and the Olympus subsidiary Olympus Winter & Ibe GmbH, both achieving high market shares in the fields of endoscopy and surgical technology.
A region with a strong potential for growth
Also in Schleswig-Holstein, medical technology is a great success story. More than 200 businesses are located here, predominantly small innovative companies developing and producing medical devices. In Schleswig-Holstein, medical technology is one of the strongest industrial sectors. Solely in the region of Lübeck, 50 businesses generate a turnover of approximately 500 million Euro. Schleswig-Holstein’s biggest company, Dräger Medical, coordinates their worldwide supply of products for emergency and home care from Lübeck. Further global players are Ethicon – a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary - and Söring, both leaders in surgical technology.
