1. Hamburg

Hamburg has an integrated and participative planning strategy and a strong commitment towards a "green" vision. There are well defined targets, excellent results, future plans and structured monitoring with respect to a sustainable city. For these efforts Hamburg received the title “European Green Capital 2011” awarded recently from the EU Commission.

Hamburg has set ambitious climate protection goals such as reducing its CO2 emissions by 40% by 2020 and by 80% by the year 2050. CO2 emissions per person have been reduced by about 15% when compared to 1990, with annual energy savings of some 46,000 MWh, a major achievement for a big city.

The Port of Hamburg on the river Elbe is Europe's second largest in terms of number of containers handled. With a growing number of containers entering and leaving the port, expansion is a continuously discussed issue. However, geographical expansion into the surrounding area is, intentionally, just not pursued. Instead, the increasing need for greater capacity is met by making more efficient use of allocated land and by generating new areas through filling-up expendable harbour basins.

Hamburg plays also an active part in the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD). In 2005, the initiative “Hamburg Learns Sustainability” was started by the Hamburg Senate. Since 2005, a yearly “Hamburg’s Plan of Action” is published. Due to the outstanding efforts made, Hamburg was the first German city that has been awarded the title “Official City of the DESD”.

The city has also achieved high environmental standards and good performance levels in terms of cycling and public transport indicators. Almost all citizens have access to optimal public transport within 300 meters of their given location. There is a systematic structure for green areas which allow citizens easy accessibility.

2. Dubai

Worldwide Green trends and recent developments in the GCC highlight the need for increased and wider exchange of information and analysis between the countries and markets of the region.

Environmental issues are becoming more and more importance in the day to day life in Dubai and the entire UAE. Awareness has been raised for environmental protection and using sustainable resources.
The last couple of years a lot happened in the UAE and especially Dubai, for example a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating system had been implemented for the building and construction industry.

For that, numerous environmental industries have been set up in Dubai, many from Germany with their innovative concepts. Especially German products in these fields are highly acknowledged.
But still much more work has to be done to make the people aware of the necessity of environmental protection and saving energy.

Sesam Business Consultants in partnership with Green Technologies are the organizer of a series of Conferences and Training Systems dedicated to environmentally friendly forms of building – commonly referred to as “Green Building”.
Building on both companies’ experience in providing educational and sustainable consultancy services, we offer platforms for professionals from the building and construction industries in the GCC allowing:

  1. Education and training on latest trends and technologies
  2. Exchange of knowledge
  3. Communication, discussion & networking

Our efforts are manifested in two strings of events:

  1. Green Building Conferences
  2. Modular Advanced Training Systems

While Green Building Conferences target the industry at large and have become important networking platforms informing about recent trends, Modular Advanced Training Systems seek to educate and train on particular topics in depth under guidance and involvement of world class experts.
