Mike Barns is a Principal Architect, and is the Director for Sustainability within Hyder Consulting. His duties include leading a team of senior staff to provide Architectural design, and detailed construction drawings for Architectural projects within the Middle East offices; managing the sustainable quality assurance, developing a green approach to design within all design and construction projects, increasing the exposure of sustainable design within the Gulf region, developing regional and international strategies and policies relating to Hyder Architecture.

With over 30 years experience in design, production and construction of Architectural projects in New Zealand, the United States and Pacific Ocean states, he is experienced in a variety of retail, education, commercial, residential, hospitality projects, where a particular architectural design Brief has been the central driver.

He has been managing architectural offices since 1986 and has been responsible for establishing national and international offices, and assisting in the development and growth of those businesses. 

Mike has established and managed his own architectural practice in the past with offices in New Zealand and the United States, the scope of which has included advising developers, private corporations and governments on full architecturally designed projects, sustainability and environmental policy frameworks.

2010 – 2011, New York University, Abu Dhabi: Lead Architect / Director of Sustainability, Technical Advisor for Client; assisting Mubadala to manage the Design Architect and Architect of Record (Rafael Vinoly Architects, NY) to achieve a world class University, New York University campus in Abu Dhabi. Projects were both local and international and all were designed to detailed Briefs to match the client needs.  Clients included North American and New Zealand Universities, Hospitality clients, large land trusts and key education institutions.

Assisting and contributing to the general research and policy direction of the University of Hawaii’s cultural and environmental development within the Schools and Center for Hawaiian, Asian and Pacific Studies.

Ministry for the Environment – Senior Government Advisor, Natural Resource Management – Formulation of national legislation framework and regional government statutory framework

 

Developing a government approach to environmental management and stewardship with the audit and review of 92 pieces of environmental legislation culminating in the preparation of new overarching environmental legislation. A two year intensive study which achieved world class legislation since adopted and adapted by a range of industrialised western countries.
