"Implementing Basic Principles of Vernacular Architecture on the Contemporary Design Process - Four Case Studies"

Ignacio Gómez is an Associate Partner at Godwin Austen Johnson (GAJ).

Born in Andalucía, Spain in 1975. Ignacio completed his Master of Architecture and Engineering, with Honors by Polytechnic University of Madrid, ETSAM. In 1998 - 1999 he was awarded with Socrates Exchange Grand Program to study at Lund Arkitektskolan och Designskolan in Sweden.

After completing his major, he enrolled in the one year Postgraduate Program in Museography and Exhibition Spaces at Foundation Antonio Camuñas, Centro Superior de Arquitectura, Madrid, Spain.

Ignacio began his architectural career in 1999 as an Architect at E-difica and BuildCom Espana. Working on developing online management tools for the construction industry during his 2 years tenure at the company in Madrid.

After he moved to Barcelona to collaborate with B720 & David Chipperfield as an Architect. For over two years he worked on the New City of Justice, recently awarded with the prestigious 2010 RIBA Award.

Working a very diverse portfolio that included Torre Agbar commercial tower, designed by Pritzker Prize winner Jean Nouvel and America’s Cup Foredeck Building design by David Chipperfield.

During his two years tenure at L35 Architects as Senior Architect in Barcelona, Ignacio gained further expertise working as lead designer on shopping malls in Antalya and Istanbul in Turkey and Marrakech, Morocco before broaden his experience internationally by moving to Dubai in 2006.

During his two years tenure at Aedas as Associate in Dubai, Ignacio worked as designer on a very diverse portfolio that included high rise residential towers and commercial, mix-used master plan, leisure buildings.

As Associate Partner at GAJ, Ignacio has been responsible for a number of key projects within Master planning, Hotel and Leisure in UAE, Egypt and KSA.

He is currently leading a team on two Mix – Used Master plans in Soma Bay, Egypt and Riyadh, KSA.

He has been awarded recently with Young Architect of the Year at the Middle East Architect Awards 2010 and Best Residential Project of the Year for Red Sea Riviera Master Plan.

His work has been published in various publications including Fisuras Magazine, Future Architecture Magazine, Via Arquitectura, 2A, Middle East Architect and Construction Week.

Ignacio is also collaborating actively as guest critic at the School of Architecture & Design of the American University of Sharjah, UAE.
