Profile of Joumana al Jabri

Joumana al Jabri
knowledge and development architect, Febrik

"A need to make a mental shift from valuing the tool (architecture) to valuing the problem (economic, social, urban, individual)"

Joumana al Jabri’s work revolves around ‘social maturity’. She has partnered on a number of projects that contribute to progressing the dialogue for the Arab region: TEDxRamallah 2011Khatt’s Typographic Matchmaking in the City, and Al Manakh: Gulf Continued; and has contributed in publications: Abitare magazineSkira Y08, and currently on Portal 9’s first issue. Joumana received her Bachelor in Architecture from Rhode Island School of Design, USA, and her MBA from a consortium of European universities through the EuroMBA program. She is currently working with a network in Beirut, Amman and Ramallah on Visualizing Palestine. Joumana is a founding partner of Febrik.

I worked as a practicing architect for seven years. My decision to reposition myself, moving outside of the common architectural practice, was with the intention to focus on issues rather than tools. Through my practice of architecture it became apparent that what places like Lebanon, Jordan and Saudi are lacking is people to connect and direct talent, where talent is present and underutilized towards larger goals and pressing issues. I now work collaboratively with individuals, companies and organizations throughout the world towards addressing a certain problem, with a current focus on shifting the existing narrative on Palestine.
